8 Must Haves for a New Dad
Becoming a new dad is an exciting and challenging experience. It can be overwhelming, especially if it's your first time. As a new dad, you'll have a lot of responsibilities to take care of, from diaper changing to feeding to soothing your baby. I remember when we had our firstborn I felt like I was drinking out of a firehose. I recall thinking "there's no manual or instructions that come with this little human?" Along the way I've come up with 8 things I feel like are essential for a first time dad.
- Baby Carrier
One of the most important things a new dad should have is a baby carrier. This will allow you to keep your hands free while carrying your baby around so that you can multitask and take care of any 'to-do's' around the house while hanging with your little one. It's also a great way to bond with your baby, as it allows you to keep them close to you. There are many different types of baby carriers available on the market, so it's important to choose one that is comfortable for both you and your baby. These will also help you save your back from pain or fatigue.
- Diaper Bag
Another essential item that every new dad needs is a diaper bag. You'll need to have everything your child needs and back-ups to your back-ups. From Diapers, change of clothes, snacks & bottles - you'll want a diaper bag that can carry everything. Look for a diaper bag that has multiple compartments and is easy to carry. Additionally, there are a handful of companies out that are geared towards dads and gives us a little style behind our diaper bag. I used the Tactical Baby Gear Deuce 3.0 Tactical Diaper bag and it was perfect.
- Baby Monitor
A baby monitor is another must-have item for new dads, full disclosure, we still use them even though our kids are a bit older. This will allow you to keep an eye on your baby while they're sleeping or playing in another room. Look for a baby monitor that has a good range and is easy to use. There are lots of options on the market so make sure it's one that you feel comfortable using and fits the needs of your house/space between rooms.
4. Changing Pad
Changing your baby's diaper can be a messy business, especially when you get surprised with an epic blow-out, which is why a changing pad is an essential item for new dads. This will allow you to change your baby's diaper on a clean surface, no matter where you are. Look for a changing pad that is easy to clean and portable. Most changing pads are foldable or collapsible so that they can easily be carried in your diaper bag.
5.Nursing Pillow
Nursing pillows was an absolute must for my wife and I. It makes life much easier and more comfortable for both you and your baby. If your partner plans on breastfeeding your baby, a nursing pillow is a must-have item. This will provide support for your partner's back and arms, making breastfeeding more comfortable. Look for a nursing pillow that is adjustable and easy to clean.
6. Swaddle Blankets
Swaddle blankets are another must-have item for new dads. These blankets will keep your baby warm and snug, while also helping to soothe them. There are a lot of options to consider such as: closure type (velcro, zipper, magnets, snaps), material (cotton, muslin, bamboo), function (sleep sack, arms out, arms tucked) and many more. When looking to purchase look for swaddle blankets that are made from soft, breathable fabric.
7. Baby Clothes
You'll need to make sure you have plenty of baby clothes. You want to make sure that you have at least one or more back up changes of clothes in case of those blow outs or leaky diapers. Make sure that you have a variety of clothes in different sizes, as babies grow quickly. Look for clothes that are comfortable and easy to put on and take off.
8. Clothing For You
Finally, as a new dad you have a lot going on and it will feel like you're constantly having to shop for diapers, food, essentials for your little one etc. It's also the most exciting and rewarding thing that will happen to you. It's important to treat yourself as well and celebrate fatherhood. Snag some gear that showcases your Father Figure and fits your style. Beit a shirt, hat or something else there are plenty of options out there to showcase that you're a new dad and proud of it.
In conclusion, becoming a new dad is an exciting and challenging experience. By having these essential items, you'll be better equipped to handle the challenges that come with being a new dad. Remember to take care of yourself as well, as being a new dad can be exhausting. Congratulations on your new bundle of joy, and enjoy this special time with your family!
